This DVD captures Dark Star Orchestra recreating one of the most well known shows in The Grateful Dead’s long history. Although known for their faithful replication of The Grateful Dead’s sound, this is by no means a by-the-numbers copy of the original show. “We like to take the set list and use it as a frame over which we lay our own patchwork of improvisation,” says DSO guitarist Rob Eaton. The Grateful Dead Songs are there, the Grateful Dead sound is there, but the rest is distinctively DSO. Videotaped live as it happened by a multi-camera crew, this video is a must-see for fans of The Grateful Dead and Dark Star Orchestra.
This 3 CD set was recorded live in digital stereo at the State Theater in Ithaca, NY on the 30th anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s concert in Barton Hall at Cornell University on May 8th 1977. To celebrate this famous show, the band recreated the set originally performed on 5-8-77. The recording was mastered by DSO’s own Rob Eaton.
This release, American Spring, features Melvin Seals (JGB) on vocals and keys, John Kadlecik (DSO) vocals, guitars, mandolin, and violectro, Kevin Rosen (DSO) on bass, and Greg Anton (Zero) on drums.
All proceeds from this CD go directly to the “G. Larned Port Education Fund” for Scott Larned's daughter. Scott was a leader, co-founder and, for years, the band's manager helping guide this thing through some tricky waters in the early goings. His swirling hammond organ and glassy piano trills captured the eighties-era sound backed up by a most effective growling Mydland-esque voice. He is missed by many.
